Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn has teased his exit from the franchise, as well as the possibility of seeing a whole new team take the lead after the franchise’s third installment.
Following The Suicide Squad, Gunn will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to round out the trilogy he began back in 2014. But it seems Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will be the final installment with Gunn at the helm, and that we may also be saying goodbye to the original team in the film that was originally scheduled to hit theaters in May of this year.
Speaking with fans during an impromptu Q&A on Instagram, the director was asked whether not he’d return for another film with the galaxy’s unlikeliest group of heroes.
“It’s probably my last one,” said Gunn. “And probably the last with the current team. But you never know!”
Plot details remain under wraps, however, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is expected to feature Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Thor alongside the returning cast. The Marvel superhero team is also expected to appear in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. But this should come as no great surprise to fans after the events of Avengers: Endgame left the God of Thunder seemingly paired up with the Guardians of the Galaxy for their next adventure.
Gunn himself was shockingly removed from his position as writer and director from the third Guardians film in the summer of 2018, due to a series of offensive tweets the director had made in his past, which resulted in the project’s delay. To complicate matters even further, Gunn jumped ship to DC Films to write and direct the long-in-development Suicide Squad sequel prior to his reinstatement on the Marvel franchise in early 2019.
Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, The Suicide Squad is still currently on track for August 2021, at which point Gunn will reshift his focus back to the third Guardians film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
