Is the Arkham series still in the works? James Gunn gives an update on one of the DC Universe’s most anticipated TV shows from Matt Reeves.
The Arkham series is an odd duck. It was originally announced long before James Gunn even revealed the initial slate for the DC Universe. The project was originally set to be a spin-off of The Batman focused on the GCPD. However, over time, it morphed into a show focused on Arkham Asylum which, while still produced by Matt Reeves, would be set in the DC Universe.
Fans haven’t heard much about Arkham since James Gunn took over the DC Universe. And with Matt Reeves finally working on The Batman sequel, many believed that the series may be dead in the water. While many outlets have reported the project being canned, it was ultimately left in limbo by the powers that be at DC Studios.
Is The Arkham Series Cancelled?
With excitement around the DC Universe finally starting to cool, these forgotten projects are now being brought back up to James Gunn in interviews. Specifically, Youtuber BobaTalks asked about the status of the Arkham series. Sadly, it seems as though the show is dead in the water, with Gunn remarking that it couldn’t come together in a satisfying way.
“Hope [that it will come out], sure. But that isn’t something that’s being developed by anyone right now. You know, it just didn’t work.”
While it’s sad to hear that a series with as interesting of a premise as Arkham is cancelled, it certainly makes sense. Many of the heaviest hitting villains in the DC Universe haven’t even been established yet. To bring them in, especially so early, could lead to some complications down the road as James Gunn tries to further develop his version of Batman.
