James Gunn Talks ‘The Suicide Squad’ Sequel & Other DC Projects

Gunn is reportedly developing an Amanda Waller series.

James Gunn recently talked about a potential sequel to The Suicide Squad and the other secret DC projects he’s working on.

James Gunn is a busy man who just wrapped filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Of course, Gunn also has his hands in the DC Universe. We’ve already received a Peacemaker spin-off, but will there be a proper sequel to The Suicide Squad? While the DC film was received well and was successful on HBO Max, it only earned $167 million at the worldwide box office. Here’s what Gunn told The Playlist about a sequel:

“Yeah, we’ve talked about it,… but the honest truth is, I just have so many hours in a day to work on stuff. And I had such a fun time working in television that I really think that’s what I’m going to spend the next year of my life doing.”

James Gunn’s Sandbox

James Gunn has also made it known that he’s working on other DC projects outside of Peacemaker. Reports suggest it will follow Amanda Waller, but Gunn wasn’t already to reveal too much just yet:

“We haven’t even announced any TV series yet… there’s a lot of stories out there about what’s happening, and some of them are accurate, some of them are not. I am working very seriously on another DC project, where I’m very involved in the writing and the direction of it… there will be some blending of the characters from ‘Peacemaker’ in the other shows I’m working on. And I’m involved with a couple of other [DC] things too.”

Here is the synopsis for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.

The Suicide Squad is available on BluRay, 4K, DVD, and Digital, while Peacemaker is streaming on HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of James Gunn’s DC projects, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
