When is Superman coming!?

Superman may be coming back sooner than fans think! James Gunn gives fans some insight on the production pipeline for the DC Universe.

Fans were shocked when James Gunn announced, not only is a follow-up for Superman already greenlit, but film’s outline had already been completed. This would likely mean the sequel would be within one of the first five projects of the new DC Universe, a remarkable turnaround in a media landscape where sequels take 5+ years to come to fruition.

The question remained, though: where exactly would it fit into the DC Universe’s current slate? The field is pretty open beyond next Fall, with the only remaining slot being The Batman‘s sequel in 2027. In a recent statement on the I Think You’re Overthinking It podcast, James Gunn revealed that the project is actually set to film early next year, angling right after The Batman‘s production.

“I can say that probably the next movie we’re gonna be making is the follow-up to ‘Superman,’ which I don’t want to get in too much detail on, but like that’s what’s probably the next film we’re making, I think.”

“Well, hopefully we’re making [‘The Batman Part 2’] before that, and then I think it’s [the ‘Superman’ follow-up]. And then we have another TV show, which nobody knows about, which is going next.”

When Is The Superman Follow-Up Coming Out?

Some may assume that, just because the Superman follow-up is filming after The Batman sequel, that mans it’ll also come out after. However, it’s important to remember that James Gunn only took a year of post-production for the first Superman film. The Batman sequel has also been delayed specifically to reach its October release month. So, if all stays the same, it’s likely fans will see Superman return to the DC Universe in the 1st or 2nd quarter of 2027.

Just under two years for a follow-up to Superman is an impressive feat, even for someone like James Gunn. His specific wording around The Batman sequel also seems to confirm, yet again, that the franchise is set outside of the mainline DC Universe. So while Batman and Superman may share a release year, they likely won’t be sharing a screen!
