Is James Gunn hiding a role for Dave Bautista? The director reveals why he debunked a rumor about the actor playing the DC Universe’s Brainiac.
The DC Universe has been home to some interesting theories, from Gorilla Grodd being the Hammer of Boravia to Blue Beetle appearing in Peacemaker. However, perhaps the most interesting theory-turned-rumor was the idea that James Gunn had cast Dave Bautista as Brainiac in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film.
Like many rumors about the DC Universe that gain traction on the net, James Gunn was quick to shut this one down. While the director admitted that he does have some ideas as for who Dave Bautista could play in the franchise, they’re not in Man of Tomorrow, and they’re certainly not Brainiac. Gunn also added that NONE of the proposed actors up for the role are actually in the running.
Why James Gunn Spoke Out For Dave Bautista
Of course, with literally HUNDREDS of casting rumors coming out every day for the DC Universe, fans have been wondering why James Gunn took the time to respond to this one. Especially since, as Gunn himself stated, there were previous reports about who would be playing Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow. The answer? Dave Bautista is his friend.
“There are numerous reasons. I said why I addressed this one in the post,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “Dave is a friend. I don’t need a bunch of stories out there about why he didn’t get the job or whatever when someone else is eventually cast.”
Given how obsessive fandom can be, especially when it comes to the new DC Universe, it makes sense as to why James Gunn would want to put the kibosh on these rumors as soon as possible. Dave Bautista is also currently in the midst of filming projects like Road House 2, any promotion for which likely would’ve been flooded with questions about Brainiac and Man of Tomorrow.
