While James Gunn resisted the urge to go hog-wild with cameos in Superman, there was one that absolutely shook the audience. That being the first appearance of Milly Alcock as Supergirl in the new DC Universe. While the character only appeared for a short snippet at the end of the film, reactions from theatergoers prove that she is an immediate fan-favorite.

However, the version of Supergirl fans saw in James Gunn’s Superman film is much different than any other adaptation of the DC Universe that’s been seen before. The heroine was a hot mess- literally. Crashing into the Fortress of Solitude as drunk as a skunk, before destroying the floor while playing with her superdog. The demeanor of Milly Alcock’s take on the character has left many to wonder how much Supergirl will be changed in the franchise.

Why Is Supergirl Such A Mess?

James Gunn actually spoke on these concerns during a recent interview with ScreenRant. The director confirmed that the version of the character fans saw in Superman will be the same one they see in Supergirl next year. However, the reason that Milly Alcock’s performance is so different when compared to other takes on the DC Universe comes down to the character’s personal history.

“Yeah, that’s her. She’s a mess. She’s a total mess. I mean, I think as we learn, she’s had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background. He’s had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she’s ended up different than her cousin.”

For as bold of a swing as Milly Alcock and James Gunn took with Supergirl in Superman, one can’t deny that it’s a thoroughly engaging take on the character. Leaning into the heroine’s struggles with mental health could be an astonishing angle for the DC Universe to explore, especially as her solo movie is focused on adapting one of the most emotional comics in the entire franchise.
