Zack Snyder is still leaving his mark on the DC Universe! James Gunn reveals he consulted the former Superman director for advice on his highly-anticipated reboot.
Perhaps one of the manufactured feuds in comic book history is the rivalry between James Gunn and Zack Snyder. Ever since Gunn set out to reboot the DC Universe with Peter Safran, the prominent narrative has been that one of the directors was the franchise’s bastion of quality, while the other was the harbinger of its downfall. This in spite of the fact that Gunn’s Superman movie isn’t even out!
Of course, this idea has been confirmed to be false on multiple occasions. Both James Gunn and Zack Snyder have wished the other the best in their new endeavors. The two have also worked together in the past, with Gunn writing Snyder’s acclaimed reboot of Dawn of the Dead long before either tried to tackle Superman or the DC Universe. And it seems that amicable relationship continued to pay dividends outside of the eyes of fans.
Zack Snyder Weighed In On Superman’s Suit
With the first trailer for Superman officially out, James Gunn has been doing his rounds to promote the project to journalists and social media influencers. This includes Screenbrief, who were able to have a quick Q&A with the DC Universe architect. During their conversation, Gunn revealed that he actually consulted Zack Snyder about David Corenswet’s costume in the upcoming reboot, even if fans can’t see the outcomes on the screen.
“And it was coming together, but it had the red trunks, it had the whole thing. And we really went back and forth a lot about the red trunks. I even talked to Zack Snyder about it. He said, ‘I tried like a billion versions with the trunks and just never got there.’ And I said, ‘I see how that’s the case.’”
Obviously, James Gunn did ultimately come around to the trunks, with David Corenswet ultimately being the one to convince him of them. However, this quote does show that Gunn is treating his predecessors with reverence when crafting the upcoming Superman reboot. While care certainly doesn’t equate to quality, it does seem as though the DC Universe is being left in good hands even without Zack Snyder.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
