James Mangold Swamp Thing DC Universe

James Mangold is teasing his involvement with the Swamp Thing movie following the DC Studios presentation.

DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed that a live-action Swamp Thing movie is a part of the first chapter of the DC Universe, which is titled “Gods and Monsters.” While the two provided no further details about the movie, James Mangold has shared a Swamp Thing comic book panel on his official Twitter page, hinting that he is working on the project.

During the DC Universe slate reveal, James Gunn and Peter Safran said that the Swamp Thing movie investigates “the dark origins” of the DC Comics icon, who made his fist appearance in the pages of 1971’s House of Secrets #92. He was created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson.

A Swamp Thing series premiered on on the short-lived DC Universe network in May 2019, with the project being axed a few months later. It was created by Gary Dauberman and Mark Verheiden, with Andy Bean and Crystal Reed co-starring and Derek Mears bringing Swamp Thing to life.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
