The X-Men are finally back! Cyclops actor James Marsden gives his thoughts on the Earth-shattering mutants trailer shown off for Avengers: Doomsday.
For anyone who grew up with the original X-Men trilogy, watching the mutants trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was a truly spiritual experience. Seeing James Marsden come back as Cyclops was a pipe dream, let alone seeing him in the classic comic attire in a setting far darker than anything fans have seen from him before.
And it seems those emotions even got to the cast. While speaking to ScreenRant, James Marsden spoke about how special it was to return as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday. He also remarked on how amazing it was to see how excited fans were to see the X-Men return, especially considering how far technology had come since the original trilogy.
“It felt really good. It was really special. It had been so long. To see how enthusiastic and how waiting with bated breath everyone is to see this movie, it feels good. To have that epic shot with modern technology and special effects.”
“When I’d do a blast, when we filmed the first movie, I’d have two rolls of film that they painted red [from my eyes]. No, but it felt good. It was a pretty cool thing to see. I watched it over and over and over again.”
James Marsden’s Redemption As Cyclops
Prior to the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, James Marsden’s Cyclops was the butt of quite a few jokes. Not because he did badly as the character, far from it. Rather, the original X-Men trilogy infamously sidelined the actor to focus more on Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine – a pattern that would echo in the next trilogy with Tye Sheridan’s take on the character being sidelined for Beast, Mystique, Magneto, and Professor X.
Avengers: Doomsday serves as a shot at redemption for James Marsden – the chance to truly take center stage in a movie and prove that Cyclops can truly be just as cool as Wolverine. While it’s not likely he’ll even return to the X-Men franchise again, there’s hope that this film will serve as one final swan song for the long-wasted performance.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in December 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
