Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is set to be the final film before the upcoming DC Universe reboot. When asked if he’s spoken to DC Studios about a potential return, James Wan played coy about his future in Atlantis.

James Wan shocked the entire world with the success of the first Aquaman, making him one of the most successful directors at DC Studios. However, with the DC Universe staring down the barrel of the reboot, it’s unclear if he’ll return to the world of Atlantis after Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. When asked if he’s spoken to anyone about returning, Wan admits he’s just happy to have made this upcoming film how he wanted to make it:

“No, not really. I mean, not really in a deeper sense,” Wan revealed during a recent interview with ScreenRant. “I know they’re in the middle of all that, so I’m sure it’s not something that you just whip up in one or two afternoons. I’m sure it’s a growing process and it depends on the different characters. I imagine that’s a pretty heavy task that they’re dealing with right now.”

“I am just happy and feel like I was able to make my movie, work on my film that takes place within its own world, and not be affected by whatever other people are doing.”

While it certainly is possible James Wan will return to direct a film in the new DC Universe, it’s unlikely to be a new Aquaman project. With reports signaling DC’s intent to recast the Justice League and Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom tracking to underperform, this seems to be the final chapter of the world of Atlantis.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
