Why isn’t Jean Grey in Avengers: Doomsday? A rumor explains why the iconic X-Men heroine isn’t returning on the silver screen late next year.
One of the most exciting moments to come out of Avengers: Doomsday was seeing the names of the original X-Men cast scroll past on the cast announcement chairs. However, as that long, long day came to an end, it turned out that a number of names were missing. Perhaps the most notable surprise was that Jean Grey’s actress, Famke Janssen, would not be making her return.
Of course, that hasn’t stopped some from speculating that Jean Grey WILL be in Avengers: Doomsday, but that her actress simply wasn’t announced. Sadly, it seems the rumor mill has come to rain on the parade. A report from Hollywood insider MyTimeToShineHello confirms that the X-Men fans meet in the film will be a version of the team where Jean Grey is already dead.
Why Isn’t Jean Grey In Avengers: Doomsday?
There are two reasons one can use to explain why Jean Grey isn’t in Avengers: Doomsday: the practical and the narrative. In a practical sense, the film is already going to be full of heroes. And, if the rumor mill is correct, there are even more heroes played by more expensive actors on the way. As such, it’s impractical to have every hero appear in Doomsday.
From a narrative perspective, it makes sense to kill a character close to whichever X-Men one wants to lead the film in order to anchor them to the conflict. And given Cyclops and Wolverine will likely be the most prominent mutants in Avengers: Doomsday, this rumor lines up with giving them extra motivation throughout the film.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in December 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
