The Flash is due to feature the return of several characters from past DC movies and the latest insider information suggests Jeremy Irons’ Alfred Pennyworth will be amongst them.
Jeremy Irons first appeared as Alfred in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, before returning in Justice League. Until now, there had been no word on Irons potentially returning for a third outing as Alfred. While Ben Affleck’s Batman will have a role in The Flash, it seems like Michael Keaton’s returning caped crusader will be the primary Batman of the reality-hopping film. As Affleck’s role could likely be a smaller one, it hadn’t been certain that Irons’ Alfred would return alongside him.
Now though, trusted insider ViewerAnon is reporting that Jeremy Irons is back in next year’s The Flash. This might suggest the film will involve more of Ben Affleck’s Batman than fans had previously been expecting, allowing time to see him and Barry Allen interacting with Alfred back in the Batcave or Wayne Manor. While Alfred’s role in the film is likely to be a minor one, his inclusion is an addition that is sure to please fans of the previous Zack Snyder helmed DC movies.
The Flash has been caught up in some controversy lately, following star Ezra Miller’s recent arrest on charges of disorderly conduct and harrasment. Warner Bros. are understood to be pausing future projects involving the actor, so it is not clear what the future of the Flash franchise or wider DCEU may look like. With DC’s growing focus on standalone films like The Batman and bringing back stars of previous franchises, like Michael Keaton’s Batman or Lynda Carter’s cameo in Wonder Woman 1984, it is not clear how much the DCEU could be changed by the events of The Flash, so there is a chance this could be Jeremy Irons’ final appearance as Bruce Wayne’s faithful butler.
Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash is inspired by the Flashpoint comic book storyline, which followed Barry Allen as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles.
In addition to Ezra Miller, The Flash also features Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as two separate versions of Batman, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul and Sasha Calle as Supergirl. Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Rudy Mancuso and Luke Brandon Field are also on board in undisclosed roles.
The Flash opens on June 23, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding Jeremy Irons and the DCEU and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
