Was Jonathan Majors going to be the next big face of the MCU? Jeremy Renner speaks on the plans Marvel had for Kang prior to his firing.
There is perhaps no actor who has plummeted from the public consciousness quicker than Jonathan Majors. The actor seemingly had Hollywood in the palm of his hand; angled to be the MCU’s next big bad as Kang the Conqueror while also landing a role as the leading villain in the ever-popular Creed franchise. This, of course, all came crashing down when the actor was charged with (and later convicted on) crimes such as assault and harassment.
As with any news related to the MCU, almost every actor that has ever associated themselves with the franchise has been asked for their “take” on the Jonathan Majors situation. The latest to speak on the ousting of Kang the Conqueror is Jeremy Renner, who was asked about it on The Breakfast Club podcast. While the actor didn’t reveal much, he did suggest that Marvel had “big plans” for the character.
“I don’t know. I don’t know what the difference is between gossip and anything else,” Renner remarked when asked if Jonathan Majors’ situation was similar to his own experiences dealing with accusations of harassment against his ex-wife in 2019. “I don’t know enough about Jonathan and his situation to know. I know they had big plans for that character, that’s for sure. Whatever transpired…that sucks, I think. The due diligence really has to be played out.”
The MCU’s Plan For Kang the Conqueror
The obvious “big plans” that Jeremy Renner was likely referring to when it came to Jonathan Majors are that he was originally set to be the leading villain of Avengers: Kang Dynasty (now titled Avengers: Doomsday) and Secret Wars. It’s likely that multiple versions of Kang the Conqueror would’ve played large roles in both movies, perhaps making him the most saturated villain in the MCU.
This isn’t to mention any projects the MCU had in the pipeline to help further develop Kang the Conqueror. It was teased that Jonathan Majors would be taking on roles like Rama-Tut, an Egyptian variant of Kang, suggesting that there may have been plans for a film focused on time travel that would’ve centered around the aforementioned variant.
