Jesse Eisenberg has revealed he would welcome a return to DC to reprise the role of Lex Luthor, but he’s not expecting the call.

The Social Network star first appeared as Lex Luthor in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, reprising the role in the following year’s Justice League. Fan reactions to Eisenberg’s radical reimagining of the character were mixed, though mostly negative.

Speaking recently about a potential return as Lex Luthor, Jesse Eisenberg admitted he would enjoy the opportunity to play the character again, but thinks the audience reaction will prevent a return.

Is DC Done With Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor?

Speaking recently to Deadline, Jesse Eisenberg revealed he would be “shocked” to get a call from DC to come back as Lex, but admitted it would be “a pleasant shock.”

The actor had been speaking following a screening of his directorial debut When You Finish Saving The World. During a talk he gave to fans, he touched upon the response to his portrayal of Lex, saying “I felt very personal about it” but the ultimate response was that “people hate me.”

In an interview after his talk, Jesse Eisenberg touched upon the possibility of a future at DC as Lex Luthor, saying:

“I’d be shocked if I wound up in a DC movie, but it would be a pleasant shock. Listen, I’m not a comic book fan. To me, it was not playing a role that I’d envisioned since childhood. To me, it was a chance to play this great character that this great writer wrote, and I loved doing that. So, to play it is a joy, and to not play it isn’t something that I’m going to be ashamed to tell my kids about, because that is not an important genre in my life, even though I loved doing that movie.”

Going on to talk about whether he would consider doing another superhero movie more generally, Eisenberg confirmed he would, saying “as an actor, you do all kinds of different things, and sometimes great roles show up in really commercial things and sometimes terrible roles show up in independent films.”

Here is the synopsis for DC’s next movie, Black Adam:
