Is J.J. Abrams’ black Superman movie dead in the water? After years of silence, one of DC Studios’ most mysterious projects finally gets an update.

J.J. Abrams has had an interesting history with DC. The writer and producer has perhaps more cancelled projects under his belt than any other person involved with the franchise. Originally set to helm a Justice League Dark storyline for the burgeoning universe, each project slowly stalled before quietly being cancelled.

Abrams next project was announced during one of DC’s most tumultuous times, with the franchise seemingly having no clear path forward after the failure of Justice League. A small spark of home was seemingly found in Abrams, with it being revealed that he would produce a movie with a black Superman written by legendary scribe Ta-Nehisi Coates.

What Happened To J.J. Abrams’ Black Superman?

The black Superman film was announced all the way back in 2021. Since then, there’s been very little in the way of updates from either J.J. Abrams or Ta-Nehisi Coates. The only news about the project came from James Gunn back in January 2024, stating that the project was still in development at DC Studios as an Elseworlds film.

Yet the project may not be leaving development anytime soon. According to a profile on J.J. Abrams by Variety, the project has essentially stalled, with no progress being made since early 2023. While the film isn’t dead, it does mean DC Studios likely won’t be doing much legwork to movie it along. And given Abrams’ history with the franchise, he likely won’t be pushing too hard either.
