While Star Wars fans were excited about appearances from legendary characters like Emperor Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker, there’s a cameo from director J.J. Abrams that flew under the radar throughout the film. When Rey, Finn and Poe travel to the desert planet Pasaana looking for Ochi of Bastoon, they discover a new robotic companion that joins them on their journey. Once D-O is switched on, he’s instantly a little cautious of anyone unfamiliar – with Rey assuming Ochi abused the droid.
D-O and BB-8 instantly strike up a friendship, but the new droid is wary of everyone else. When characters speak to D-O or ask the droid questions, he responds with “No thank you” or polite answers in a familiar voice. Director J.J. Abrams is the voice behind D-O with some sound editing to make his lines sound robotic enough to fit into the universe. With D-O becoming a new fan-favourite character, it’s surprising that more fans hadn’t noticed director J.J. Abrams voicing the droid.
