‘Star Wars’: JJ Abrams’ Company & Lucasfilm Disagreed On This ‘Force Awakens’ Scene

There seems to be many disagreements on these films...

JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot and Lucasfilm disagreed on this pivotal scene from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Fewer films have been the subject of as much polarized reception than the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. The trilogy, which kicked off with The Force Awakens in 2015 started off with much promise for critics and fans alike. Even though JJ Abrams’ first entry in the trilogy received much criticism for borrowing much of its plot structure from 1977’s A New Hope, many were excited about the possibilities that the next two films would bring for the characters both old and new.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was then followed by both Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi and JJ Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker. While The Last Jedi was praised by many critics, it ranks up there with the likes of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as one of the most divisive franchise blockbusters of the last decade. The Rise of Skywalker sought to pivot to a more “fan-service’ based story, and was subject to a mixed reception from critics and audiences alike.

There seems to be a consensus amongst both audiences and some of the creatives that worked with Lucasfilm that the Sequel Trilogy lacked a coherent vision along three films, including JJ Abrams himself. With this recent comment from Pablo Hidalgo, whom serves as a member of the Lucasfilm story group, an interesting note was made regarding disagreements between them and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot about this particular story element from The Force Awakens:

Pablo Hidalgo made a specific clarification regarding this comment, explaining that this was reflecting a select few people, rather than both Lucasfilm and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot specifically having points of view:

It will be fascinating to see if we continue to hear more stories about the making of the Sequel Trilogy, whether it’d be how Lucasfilm and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot brought The Force Awakens to life, or how Rian Johnson’s vision of Star Wars brought a unique spark of creative energy that while some find “antithetical” to George Lucas’ vision, others find pretty fresh and exciting.

Directed by JJ Abrams from a script he co-wrote with Lawrence Kasdan, Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max von Sydow.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is available to stream on Disney Plus and to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD.
