The first reactions to Joaquin Phoenix’s upcoming standalone Joker film have hit the web, revealing what fans should expect when the new Clown Prince of Crime arrives in theaters this October.

Joaquin Phoenix makes his debut as the new Joker in the film which features an origin story for the iconic Batman villain. The three-time Academy-award nominee has long been rumored to have crushed his performance in the film.

Todd Phillips (The Hangover) directed the film, which will take place outside of the current DC cinematic universe in an attempt to create new storylines and expand on DC canon. He also wrote the Joker movie script with Scott Silver (8 Mile), drawing inspiration from Martin Scorsese classics such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, with the film taking place in a gritty 1980s Gotham. It’s said to focus on Joaquin Phoenix as a failed comedian who becomes The Joker after bombing with audiences.

Joker premiered at the Venice International Film Festival today ahead of its U.S. debut in Toronto. The highly-anticipated movie opens in theaters nationwide this October.

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fracturedsociety. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Opening in theaters on October 4, 2019, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Brett Cullen, Bryan Callen, and Robert De Niro. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for more updates on the Joker movie!
