Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker recently topped a list of the most complained about 2019 films in the United Kingdom.

Leading up to the release of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, there was plenty of positive buzz coming from film festivals, but there was also a worry for theater safety. Thankfully, nothing tragic ever occurred and the film went on to become a box office and critical success for Warner Bros. However, Joker still has plenty of critics online.

According to a recent report from the British Board of Film Classification, Joker was the most complained about film of last year with 20 out of the 149 people who participated expressing their issues with the movie. In the United States, Joker earned an R-rating, but in the United Kingdom, the DC film received an age 15 classification, which sparked a lot of complaints. The annual report goes on to say the following about Joker‘s rating in the United Kingdom:

“Several stated that we should have classified the film 18 because of violence and the film’s tone. A small number felt that the film should be banned. There are scenes of strong violence in the film that include stabbings and shootings, with accompanying bloody injury detail. They do not, however, dwell on the infliction of pain or injury in a manner that requires an 18.”

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
