Freshly launched, HBO Max features a treasure trove of DC content, and will soon be the home to Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League. While it sports tons of DC favorites like Man of Steel and The Dark Knight, it’s the Clown Prince of Crime that’s hogging all of the spotlight. As if winning two Academy Awards and a billion dollars isn’t enough, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker has a new accomplishment to boast. Reelgood’s recent study has found that Phoenix’s Joker is the most popular movie on HBO Max.
Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal as the Joker leads the pack, with Brad Pitt’s Ad Astra and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone being the second and third most popular films on HBO Max. Joker holds a 7.3% share of all movie streams on the streaming service. The sci-fi flick Ad Astra boasts 5.2%, whilst the first Harry Potter movie holds 2.4%. The animated hit Rick and Morty is HBO Max’s most popular small-screen offering. Game of Thrones and Friends follow suit in the second and third spot.
It isn’t surprising that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is the most popular movie on HBO Max considering it’s one of the most recent films to hit the service. Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:
Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
