Joker star Joaquin Phoenix is still open to play the Clown Prince of Crime but is unsure if a sequel to his 2019 film will ever be made.

In 2019, Joaquin Phoneix’s Joker was released to mixed reviews but a solid reception otherwise. The film would go on to earn over $1B at the worldwide box-office on a $55M budget, making it not only the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide but also the most profitable DC film ever. The film also went on to earn 11 Academy Award nominations and even snagged one for Best Actor in a Lead Role for Joaquin Phoenix. Now the only question that remains is if we’ll ever see more of this version of Joker.

Since the film was released both Joaquin Phoenix and Joker director Todd Phillips have been open to returning to the world they created. A sequel to the film is reportedly still in development and Phillips is apparently co-writing the movie’s screenplay. If there are any plans to do a sequel, however, Phoenix has been kept in the dark.

During a recent interview with The Playlist, Joaquin Phoneix revealed that he was still open to playing the Arthur Fleck but was currently unsure if the film would ever be made:

“I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to —you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the sequel and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
