Joel Kinnaman Calls James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ Heavily R-Rated

Joel Kinnaman has revealed a few new details about James Gunn's 'The Suicide Squad'.

The Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman says that the upcoming James Gunn superhero film is heavily R-Rated.

Since James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad was announced, it hasn’t exactly been clear what it will be other than the fact that it is some kind of followup to the 2016 David Ayer original. The film’s rating has also been a mystery. Warner Bros. has been slowly warming to the idea of R-Rated superhero films with Joker becoming the single most profitable DC film of all time. However, Birds of Prey somewhat floundered at the box office and its performance begged the question as to whether or not Warner Bros. would risk another high profile R-Rated DC film any time soon. The Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman, however, has indicated that the studio will be taking another shot at an R-Rated blockbuster.

In Suicide Squad, Joel Kinnaman plays Rick Flag, who works as Amanda Waller’s right hand, keeping Task Force X in line and detonaning the bombs in the back of their necks when needed. Kinnaman is reprising the role for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and recently spoke about the film being R-Rated and just how insane the whole thing is:

“Oh yeah! Yeah, that movie is going to be insane. The script is so funny. Every page of that script was funny, and every page made me laugh. James just has this command of that genre, but also over every aspect of comedy and even the marketing. He just understands the world so well, and since he wrote it, he really reinvents not just the concepts, but also the characters. For me, it was like I did my first comedy, but it’s like heavily R-rated. So much of the action is practical with real explosions, and yeah, that movie is going to be insane. It’s such a great cast that he put together. John Cena, that motherfucker is a comedic genius. No one would make us laugh on set more than John. Every scene he was in, he would go on an improvised tangent. There are so many chops in that cast, and James has such a command of it all. He knows exactly what he wants, and sometimes it’s going to take him ten takes to get there, or it’s going to take one. And he knows exactly when he gets what he needs because his ear is so attuned to it. It was a real learning experience for me too because I’d never done a comedy in that way before. So I asked James to work with me and teach me this shit. And yeah, we had so much fun doing it. That movie is going to be a fucking monster. Honestly, even though I’m in it, I can’t wait to see it as a fan.”

What do you all make of Joel Kinnaman’s words?  Are you surprised to hear that The Suicide Squad is going the R-Rated route? Sound-off in the comments!

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto as The Joker. However, James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the team in his upcoming movie.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is currently set to be released on August 6, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming DC film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
