John Cena has opened up about the creative freedom afforded by the Peacemaker HBO Max series.
After debuting in last year’s The Suicide Squad, John Cena’s Peacemaker is set to headline his very own HBO Max series this week. The highly-anticipated series comes from showrunner James Gunn, who will direct most of the episodes. The HBO Max series debuts tomorrow with three episodes, which should give us a perfect reintroduction to Cena’s unhinged and patriotic DC anti-hero.
With the extended length afforded by the HBO Max series, fans can expect a deep dive into the character that a two-hour film simply can’t afford. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Peacemaker star John Cena opened up about how the HBO Max series allowed him to explore the character further, giving him more creative freedom.
“It’s great. It’s the first time I’ve ever taken an IP or a character into an extended look besides WWE’s John Cena. So that’s really fun, to be able to embrace the patience of not having to rush through everything in an hour and 45 minutes to two and a half hours. It’s a different approach, but it’s one that I like because I like being able to take a breath and soak in the nuances of what it might be going on. So it is a different approach, but it’s one that I prefer.”
Details on the Peacemaker series are slim but seeing as there’s lots more time to explore the character through the serialized format, we can expect a decent expansion on the character. John Cena has excelled at comedic performances as of late but we’re hoping to see the star explore his dramatic side in the HBO Max series, especially when his character is faced with tough decisions in the back half of the season.
Here’s a synopsis for James Gunn’s Peacemaker:
PEACEMAKER explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it!
Peacemaker was created by James Gunn, who wrote all the episodes and directed five of them. The first season of the DC series will consist of eight episodes, with Brad Anderson, Jody Hill, and Rosemary Rodriguez also directing episodes. Clint Mansell and Kevin Kiner will compose the score.
Peacemaker premieres on HBO Max on January 13, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming DC series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
