Joker: Folie à Deux is bombing HARD at the box office! A new report shows the film suffered one of the worst opening weekends in comic book history.
Fans were wary when it was announced that a sequel to 2019’s Joker film was in development. Many saw it as wholly unnecessary. And, as details came out revealing that Joker: Folie à Deux was set to have musical elements, many others saw it as completely outside of their interest. This led many to assume that the sequel would underperform at the box office compared to the original, but almost nobody predicted that the opening weekend would be as poor as it ended up being.
A report from Deadline revealed that Joker: Folie à Deux suffered a disastrous $37.8 million opening weekend domestically, well below the already dismal $47 million expected from the project. This puts the film at a similar box office bounty to Morbius, which was considered a failure with a budget far, far below that of Joker‘s sequel.
The Anatomy Of The Joker Sequel’s Fall
Joker: Folie à Deux turned out to be a surprisingly expensive sequel. While the original Joker cost only $55 million to make, its follow-up cost almost $200 million dollars, nearly quadrupling its budget. When combined with marketing and other associated costs, the project would need to make $450 million at the box office just to break even, a number almost impossible to reach with such a horrendous opening weekend.
Interestingly, while the domestic box office for Joker: Folie à Deux is horrendous, the project is doing well overseas. The opening weekend for Joker‘s sequel internationally came in close to projections at $81 million. While a $120 million debut would be an unparalleled dream for any other project, it’s an unequivocal bomb for this billion-dollar follow-up,
