The project served as a sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 film Joker, which grossed over a billion dollars at the box office and even managed to win an Oscar. Todd Phillips did manage to maintain the duology’s thematic undertones, with the film reflecting on how society’s views of criminal justice and sensationalism can push a man to do horrible things. The musical misfire ended its run with a $206,400,287 gross. $58,300,287 came from the domestic box office, while an additional $148,100,000 was made internationally.
For any other film, this would be seen as a success. However, not only was Joker: Folie à Deux following up a billion-dollar baby, but it also had a budget of over $200 million. Given this generally doesn’t account for marketing costs, it seems Todd Phillips’ film managed to lose DC and Warner Bros. Discovery quite a pretty penny. Though with the project now heading to streaming, it’s possible at least some of that could be made up in the digital marketplace.
