Joker: Folie à Deux is officially one of the biggest comic book movie flops ever. The final box office figures for DC’s most controversial projects reveal that nobody is laughing at Arthur Fleck now.
It’s no secret that Joker: Folie à Deux was a historic flop, not just for DC, but the entire film industry. The project served as a sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 film Joker, which grossed over a billion dollars at the box office and even managed to win an Oscar. It was a true underdog story, with many resonating with the themes of social isolation and mental health.
Joker: Folie à Deux defied all expectations for a sequel, though perhaps not in the way anyone would have hoped. Todd Phillips did manage to maintain the duology’s thematic undertones, with the film reflecting on how society’s views of criminal justice and sensationalism can push a man to do horrible things. However, the film’s transformation into a musical, choppy pacing, and generally perplexing creative decisions left many fans of the first film feeling like the joke was on them.
Joker: Folie à Deux Bombs At The Box Office
With the film now primed for its streaming release, the final box office tally for Joker: Folie à Deux has officially been revealed online. The musical misfire ended its run with a $206,400,287 gross. $58,300,287 came from the domestic box office, while an additional $148,100,000 was made internationally.
For any other film, this would be seen as a success. However, not only was Joker: Folie à Deux following up a billion-dollar baby, but it also had a budget of over $200 million. Given this generally doesn’t account for marketing costs, it seems Todd Phillips’ film managed to lose DC and Warner Bros. Discovery quite a pretty penny. Though with the project now heading to streaming, it’s possible at least some of that could be made up in the digital marketplace.
