According to a new report by Revenge of the Fans, Joker will surprise audiences and certain material from the Joaquin Phoenix film was intentionally leaked to “throw people off.”
Throughout the fall of 2018, audiences were given a glimpse at director Todd Phillips’ Joker through set photos as production was underway in New York. However, Revenge of the Fans has heard that some of the material was purposefully leaked to throw audiences off and that certain scenes and sequences will be different when audiences finally see Joker.
The outlet also notes that terms such as “heartbreaking,“ “pitiful,” and “a tragedy” have been used to describe the film and that it will have political undercurrents in the vein of V for Vendetta with commentary on U.S. president Donald Trump. The reports also likens Joker to two films by Martin Scorsese, who was rumored to be a producer on the project at one point:
I’ve heard comparisons made between The Joker and the raw 70s/80s storytelling style of filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Sidney Lumet. In particular, I keep hearing the film has a very “Taxi Driver meets The King of Comedy” vibe- which may explain why Scorsese was once rumored to be producing the film.

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
