Joker almost retook the top spot from Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil in last weekend’s domestic box office.

In its fourth weekend, Joker continues to be a huge success, showing its legs at the box office. Joker has earned over $851 million worldwide and it now the highest grossing R-rated film of all time. Joker held the top spot at the box office for two weeks until Maleficent: Mistress of Evil took it down.

Word of mouth looks to be working in Joker‘s favor due to the showdown between it and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil at the box office. Because the race for the top spot was so close, it was originally reported that Joker dethroned Maleficent: Mistress of Evil over the weekend. However, updated numbers from Exorcist Relations Co. shows that Maleficent: Mistress of Evil actually beat the Joker. The difference between the two films was extremely close.  The new numbers say that Maleficent: Mistress of Evil earned $19.3 million while Joker made $19.2 million.

Do you think Joker will end up making a billion dollars at the box office? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!

Here is the official synopsis for Joker:

Director Todd Phillips’ Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker is now playing in theaters.
