Sony’s El Muerto movie has found its director, as Jonás Cuaron has boarded the upcoming Marvel project that is set to star Bad Bunny.

TheWrap reports that Jonás Cuaron is directing the El Muerto project from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote the upcoming Blue Beetle movie featuring Xolo Maridueña. Music superstar Bad Bunny is playing El Muerto, a super-powered wrestler who made his comic book debut in the pages of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6.

The son of four-time Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuaron, Jonás Cuaron is best known for his work on the 2015 thriller Desierto, the winner of the FIPRESCI award at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Meanwhile, Dunnet-Alcocer is the writer behind the highly-anticipated Blue Beetle film, with his most recent release being the 2019 action flick Miss Bala from Sony.

Bad Bunny, a.k.a. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is a Puerto Rican recording artist who has won two Grammy awards. He made his acting debut in the third season of Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico before appearing in the David Leitch-directed action movie Bullet Train opposite Brad Pitt.

Sony’s Marvel Universe continues to grow

Sony announced the El Muerto movie during its most recent CinemaCon panel back in April. In addition to El Muerto, the studio is also developing a slew of other Marvel projects, including Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web.

Here is the synopsis for Sony’s latest Spider-Man spin-off Morbius:

One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the film stars Jared Leto as the lead anti-hero, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the project with Lucas Foster, while Palak Patel will oversee for Sony.

Morbius is now available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Meanwhile, El Muerto is set to be released on January 12, 2024. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Sony’s various Spider-Man spin-off films and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
