Josh Brolin Turned Down Chris Pratt’s Role In ‘Jurassic World’

The one time Thanos approves of Star-Lord.

Josh Brolin Jurassic World Chris Pratt

Josh Brolin admitted to turning down the Jurassic World role that went to Chris Pratt.

Josh Brolin is an acclaimed performer with both leading man and character actor sensibilities. Many audiences were first introduced to him in 1985’s cult classic, The Goonies, got further acquainted to his acclaimed work in films such as No Country For Old Men and Milk – the latter of which he received his first Academy Award nomination for, and of course, his two roles in Marvel films: Cable in Deadpool 2, and Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As an in-demand actor, big franchises have often looked at him for certain roles, and one of those franchises was none other than Jurassic World, in which he almost played Owen Grady (Chris Pratt).

In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Josh Brolin discussed turning down the Jurassic World role, and explained why he believes that Chris Pratt was ultimately the better choice for the role:

“And Jurassic World, with all respect to Steven [Spielberg], I could not picture me doing it. I could not picture me being that guy. And I’m very, very happy, based on my decision, of what Chris does with it because I think Chris is the right guy. When I saw Chris in Guardians of the Galaxy, and I was just like, ‘What?’ I mean, we all were. I even said it to him embarrassingly at a party, ‘Dude!’ So, I think I knew from a big picture standpoint that somebody else would do a much better job than me.”

It would’ve been interesting to see what type of sensibilities Josh Brolin would’ve brought to the role of Owen Grady in Jurassic World, especially due to the fact that given his filmography compared to Chris Pratt’s, both have showcased different types of range. Ultimately, it appears that the right choice was made between the two.

Here is the synopsis for the upcoming sequel, Jurassic World Dominion:

This summer, experience the epic conclusion to the Jurassic era as two generations unite for the first time. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are joined by Oscar®-winner Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill in Jurassic World Dominion, a bold, timely and breathtaking new adventure that spans the globe. From Jurassic World architect and director Colin Trevorrow, Dominion takes place four years after Isla Nublar has been destroyed. Dinosaurs now live—and hunt—alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures. Jurassic World Dominion, from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, propels the more than $5 billion franchise into daring, uncharted territory, featuring never-seen dinosaurs, breakneck action and astonishing new visual effects.

Directed by Colin Trevorrow from a script he co-wrote with Emily Carmichael, the film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Mamadou Athie, Scott Haze, Dichen Lachman, Daniella Pineda, Campbell Scott, Isabella Sermon, Justice Smith, Omar Sy, DeWanda Wise, and BD Wong.

The film opens in theaters on June 10, 2022.
