Thanos may be gearing up to make his return! Josh Brolin gives his thoughts on whether he’d reprise his iconic role in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Secret Wars is truly set to be a “who’s who” of the Marvel multiverse, bringing together actors from within the MCU and beyond for something truly unforgettable. With the Russo Brothers now behind the wheel, many have been wondering if Thanos will play some sort of role in the upcoming project. When asked about the prospect, Josh Brolin revealed that he’d be more than willing to come back for the Russo Brothers.
“I’m not kidding — There’s a thing with playing Thanos. It’s like, ‘Oh, they’re gonna bring Thanos back.’ It’s like Sicario ; it has to be right,” Brolin explained in an interview with Collider. “It’s like Ryan Reynolds and I talking about Taylor Swift and we should be talking about Deadpool 4 . But we go back and forth.”
“Again, it’s what in his mind fits, what in my mind fits. Thanos has to fit if you’re going to bring him back. I would do anything that the Russos wanted me to do.”
Josh Brolin was then asked if Marvel had been in contact about him making a return as Thanos in Avengers: Secret Wars. While he didn’t give a direct answer, the actor did cough, suggesting that there’s some developments to the point that he can’t say anything without giving key details away. Though how deep those talks are, and if they extend to Avengers: Doomsday, aren’t exactly clear at this moment in time.
How Thanos Could Return In Avengers: Secret Wars
In truth, one of the biggest reasons people want Josh Brolin to return as Thanos is due to Robert Downey Jr. being cast as Doctor Doom. In the 2015 comic that Avengers: Secret Wars and Avengers: Doomsday seem to be based off, a Beyonder-empowered Doctor Doom rips out Thanos’ spine with a single blow. This could be a perfect way for Marvel and the Russo Brothers to establish the villain is a threat dangerous enough for the MCU to unite around.
Then again, Marvel did recently reveal a new design for King Thanos to be used in one of their rides at Avengers Campus at Disney’s California Adventure Park. It’s possible that Josh Brolin makes his return as an older and wiser Thanos in Avengers: Secret Wars, potentially helping out the MCU’s greatest heroes in taking down Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom.
