Josh Trank recently opened up about his Fantastic Four movie and what his plans for the franchise where if there was a sequel.
The Fantastic Four have had their fair share of struggles on the big screen with the unreleased film in 1994, the early 2000s films, and the recent 2015 reboot from Josh Trank. Now, the rights to the Fantastic Four reside with Marvel Studios with plans underway for another attempt with the iconic Marvel characters.
The production of the Fantastic Four 2015 reboot was notably a troubled one. The film went through many reshoots and would eventually bomb at the box office. Trank also made it known when the movie was released in theaters that it wasn’t his version of the film. In a recent interview with Polygon, Trank talked about his vision for the Fantastic Four franchise:
“The end of the Fantastic Four was going to very organically set up the adventure and the weirdness and the fun. That would be the wish fulfillment of the sequel. Because obviously, the sequel would be, ‘OK, now we are [superpowered] forever and it’s weird and funny and there’s adventure lurking around every corner.’ But the first movie was going to basically be the filmic version of how I saw myself all the time: the metaphor of these characters crawling out of hell.”
Trank also opened up about how he and co-writer Jeremy Slater didn’t see eye to eye when it came to the tone of the film:
“The trials of developing Fantastic Four had everything to do with tone. You could take the most ‘comic booky’ things, as far as just names and faces and identities and backstories, and synthesize it into a tone. And the tone that [Slater] was interested in was not a tone that I felt I had anything in common with.”
