Birds of Prey star Jurnee Smollett has teased her return to her role as Black Canary.
Back in 2020, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) was released to mostly positive reviews but box office indifference. This, however, did not stop several of the actors and actresses from returning to the roles or signing on for more DC-related projects. This has included Jurnee Smollett for her role as Black Canary.
In Birds of Prey, Jurnee Smollett played the character Black Canary. In the film, she was a singer at the Black Mask Club and the personal driver of the movie’s primary antagonist Roman Sionis. Eventually, she joins with the other heroic characters to take on Sionis after his cruelty becomes too much for her. This, however, is not the planned final appearance for Smollett as the character.
Jurnee Smollett Gets Her Own Film
Back in 2021, it was revealed that a Black Canary solo film was in development for HBO Max with Jurnee Smollett set to reprise her role. Since then very little has been revealed about the upcoming movie. Despite the various shakeups at Warner Bros, the film is still apparently being made. While speaking to The New York Times, Smollett briefly teased her involvement in the film, noting the number of films in the pipeline:
“I’m very excited about the slate of films we have coming down the pipeline. They’re dream roles.”
Jurnee Smollett last appeared as Black Canary in Birds of Prey. Here is the DC film’s official synopsis:
“You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.”
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
Birds of Prey is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned fro all the latest news on the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
