Warner Bros. wouldn't allow Superman to wear the black suit in the theatrical cut.

The recently showcased black Superman suit from Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is CGI.

Just yesterday, Zack Snyder debuted  footage of Henry Cavill wearing the Black Superman suit. It turns out that throughout Justice League, Cavill’s Superman was intended to rock the black suit. Warner Bros. didn’t budge with the idea, thinking it was best to let Cavill don the iconic blue and red Superman suit. After Snyder left his directorial duties due to a personal tragedy, studio execs stepped in and ensured that the black suit would only remain an idea that never saw the big screen.

Now that Zack Snyder is getting his cut of Justice League, we’ll be seeing a whole lot of the black Superman suit. Because the studio never let him implement the black suit in the film, Snyder revealed that the footage of Cavill in the suit was actually CGI. Speaking on the same Justice Con panel where he debuted the footage, Snyder discussed how he and his team managed to create the CGI suit.

“At the time, the studio said there was no chance because I was arguing for the black suit the entire time and they were like, ‘We don’t think it’s a good idea.’ ‘I’d say, ‘What do you mean?’ We would always about…eventually we were like ‘Fine. Don’t worry about it, we’re good.’ We said we’ll shoot the suit the way it was, but we had done little adjustments to the suit that would make it a little easier to dial it and contrast it a little more because we had done some experiments in Photoshop, so we knew how to do it. We had done a bunch of private experiments to make sure we could switch it on the ‘DL’ since frankly, they just weren’t into it. I thought from the beginning it was a great idea because it was the correct evolution for him when he rose from the dead, he’d have the black suit. It just made sense.”

The private experiments definitely came in handy as the footage that debuted yesterday looks natural and flows very well within the environment. While it’ll never look as perfect as an actual suit, it really shows just how much Zack Snyder is willing to do to get his vision of Justice League seen by fans. With the black Superman suit featured predominantly in his cut of the film, fans can expect a drastically different project than the one they got in 2017.
