Karl Urban offered an update on the status of a Dredd sequel and shared his hopes for the character’s on-screen future.

In 2012, A new Judge Dredd film was released with Karl Urban starring as the titular law enforcer. While Dredd received generally positive to mixed reviews, it did not fare well at the box office, earning $41 million on an estimated budget of $30–45 million.

However, the Karl Urban film has earned a cult following consisting of fans who are eager to see a sequel to the film. During an appearance at C2E2 over the past weekend, Karl Urban responded to a fan’s question on the subject of a sequel by noting that he would love to make another one but added that he wants to see more stories with the character even if he’s not playing the role:

Listen, I would love to make it, I’m on the record saying that a bunch of times. I don’t know if that’s gonna happen. I think that the guys that own the rights to Dredd, Rebellion, I think they’re developing something called ‘Mega-City One’ and it would just be great to see more Dredd, whether it’s with me or not, it doesn’t matter. I’m a fan of Dredd and there’s so many great stories there. I’d love to see them. And I have no doubt that, someday, someone will make it. It’s just a matter of time.”
