In September 2022, it was announced that DC would be developing a sequel to the cult-classic 2005 film Constantine with Keanu Reeves reprising his role as the titular character. In the months since this announcement, leadership shakeups at DC Studios and their parent company Warner Bros. Discovery have left the fate of the film up in the air, with Reeves now saying that the project is currently being ‘Re-evaluated’ by DC leadership.
This news came during an interview with Collider about Reeves’ upcoming film John Wick: Chapter 4. When asked about the future of the sequel in James Gunn’s new plan for the DCU, Reeves said “[The] DC world [is] re-evaluating whether or not they want to do a Constantine with me in the movie… So fingers crossed!”
The original film was met with a mixed reception upon release. Many fans didn’t like some of the liberties the film took with the original Hellblazer comics and many critics weren’t a fan of some of the weirder elements that did translate over, with critic Roger Ebert even putting it on his list of “Most Hated Films”. When the time came around for a sequel to be pitched, Warner Bros. didn’t have any interest in where director Francis Lawrence wanted to take the series and passed on the offer.
What can fans expect from the next John Constantine movie?
Keanu Reeves is attached to reprise his role as John Constantine for the first time since 2005, with Francis Lawrence returning to the director’s chair. The first Constantine movie earned $230.9 million at the worldwide box office.
The Constantine announcement has sparked a lot of excitement among fans, who are eager to see what Keanu Reeves will bring to the role in the sequel. The 58-year-old actor is known for his ability to bring depth and nuance to characters like the fan-favorite assassin John Wick, and fans are confident that he will bring the same level of dedication and attention to detail to the role of Constantine.
The plot of the Constantine sequel is being kept under wraps. Fans can expect to see Keanu Reeves navigating the dangerous and supernatural world that the character inhabits, as he continues to fight against the forces of evil and to protect humanity from the threats posed by demons and other supernatural creatures.
The Constantine sequel is expected to be an Elseworlds-type movie set outside the DC Universe. James Gunn and Peter Safran are working on creating an interconnected DCU consisting of film, television, animation and video game projects.
