Kevin Conroy Talks Playing Live-Action Batman In ‘Crisis On Infinite Earths’

Kevin Conroy discussed his experience portraying a live-action version of Bruce Wayne / Batman for the first time in Crisis on Infinite Earths.

While Kevin Conroy’s voice performance as Bruce Wayne / Batman from the ’90s animated series is widely regarded as the best depiction of the Dark Knight to date, many fans had been yearning to see the actor portray the Dark Knight in a live-action project for years. Now, those fans will get their wish when Kevin Conroy makes a guest appearance as an older Bruce Wayne / Batman in the Batwoman episode of the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.

However, this version of Bruce Wayne / Batman will be different from the older one Kevin Conroy voiced for Batman Beyond. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Conroy discussed how Crisis on Infinite Earths allowed him to explore previously unexamined dark sides to Bruce Wayne / Batman:

“In this, I explore a lot of [the] dark corners of Bruce Wayne. But they’re different than the ones I explored on Batman Beyond.

Kevin Conroy noted that he “jumped at” the chance to appear in Crisis on Infinite Earths partly due to the fan interest in seeing him portray a live-action Bruce Wayne /Batman. However, Kevin Conroy added that he was surprised by some of the initial challenges of playing Bruce Wayne / Batman on screen as opposed to solely recording his voice in a studio:

“It threw me at first. I never approached this character from that physicalized aspect. I always just inhabited him with my voice. When you do that in a recording studio, it’s a very intimate experience and you’re sort of living in your own imagination. You do it with your eyes clothes and you’re in this other world, and you have Mark Hamill feeding you all the energy you [need], and the other actors (because we always recorded together in the booths). To actually be on the set, in the physical world, and to be walking as the character and inhabiting the character in three dimensions, it was a real transition for me. It did take a while to get used to, I have to admit. I was surprised because I know the character so well.”
