Kevin Feige Says Chloe Zhao Used Her ‘Signature Style’ On ‘Eternals’

Before pitching Eternals, Zhao was considered for Black Widow.

Kevin Feige and Chloe Zhao both discussed the vision for Marvel Studios’ Eternals after the director took home multiple Oscars on Sunday for Nomadland.

Eternals remains the biggest mystery on Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 slate, and not just because we haven’t seen anything yet. The Marvel film is said to be “a very bold and very ambitious, sprawling 7,000-year story of humanity and our place in the cosmos,” with an Oscar winner now at the helm in Chloe Zhao—a first for the studio.

Chloe Zhao’s Eternals will also introduce a brand-new cast of characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some of which we’ve gotten a glimpse of thanks to set videos. It might’ve felt like many images from the set of Eternals hit the internet, and we might have a better idea why. In a recent Variety piece about Zhao, Kevin Feige talked about how the director fought for practical locations that were later showcased in a sample reel:

“This is right out of a camera; there’s no VFX work to this at all! Because it was a beautiful sunset, with perfect waves and mist coming up from the shore on this giant cliffside — really impressive stuff.”

Marvel Studios continues to push the style of their projects, and Eternals could feature the most district auteur sensibilities to date. This is something Kevin Feige realized after watching Nomadland and seeing similar shots:

“Oh! That is not just what she wanted to bring to Marvel, this is a signature style.”

Before pitching Eternals with producer Nate Moore, Chloe Zhao was eyed for Black Widow. After her “spectacular” pitch, Zhao spoke about the creative freedom Marvel Studios gave her on the film:

“Props to Marvel — from early on, they knew the way I wanted to make this film, how I wanted to shoot. It can’t be hundreds of people standing around. So they very much adapted how to run the set the way that I wanted to work. I’m still surrounded by 25 people. They just have armies, and each of them knew they needed to keep the army away.”
