Early concept art for Thor shows Kevin McKidd as the God of Thunder before Chris Hemsworth’s casting as the Marvel hero.
Before the folks at Marvel Studios nailed casting the role of Thor, they were on the lookout for their next lead. One of the names in contention for the role of Thor was British actor Kevin McKidd, who is best known for playing Owen Hunt in Grey’s Anatomy, as well as voicing the beloved Captain John “Soap” MacTavish in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games. Chris Hemsworth was eventually cast as the God of Thunder in June 2009 but recently-released concept art shows McKidd in the role.
We don’t know we Kevin McKidd stopped being in the running for the role but he was having conversations with Marvel all the way until December 2008. The concept art, done by Charlie Wen, is from before pre-production started, when McKidd must’ve been the favorite for the role. You can check it out below.

#happysaturday , everyone. Thought you might enjoy another very early Thor concept done even before preproduction started. I was trying out different actors to base #Thor on since @chrishemsworth didn’t have the role yet at the time. This was based on @therealkmckidd . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #marvel #marvelstudiios #earlyconcept #conceptdesign #conceptart #visualdevelopment #mcu #imcharliewen
The suit Kevin McKidd’s Thor is wearing is not so different than the one we saw Chris Hemsworth sport until 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. The concept art also shows Thor’s signature locks and hammer, though most of it has been cut off. In the caption, Wen specifies that he was trying out different concept art images based on actors who were in the running for the role. Hopefully, he’ll continue to share more early concept art so we get a better understanding of who could have been the Norse God.
Do you think Kevin McKidd should have played Thor? Or are you glad that Chris Hemsworth got the role? Let us know in the comments!
Chris Hemsworth is set to reprise his role as the Marvel hero in Thor: Love and Thunder. Full details on the plot for Love and Thunder are currently under wraps, though the film will be partly based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book run, in which Jane Foster becomes the new Thor. Directed by Taika Waititi from a script he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film will also star Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released on February 11, 2022. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more video content in the future!
