Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has begun production at Disney Studios Australia.

Disney’s 20th Century Studios has announced that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now filming in Sydney, Australia. The production is based at Disney Studios Australia, formerly known as Fox Studios Australia, the home of blockbusters like 1999’s The Matrix and 2006’s Superman Returns.

A new beginning for the Apes series

Wes Ball, the man behind the Maze Runner trilogy from 20th Century Studios, is directing Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The film’s script was written by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver and Patrick Aison.

“Planet of the Apes is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio’s legacy,” Steve Asbell, President 20th Century Studios, said in a statement. “With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes we are privileged to continue the series’ tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema, and can’t wait to share Wes’ extraordinary vision for this new chapter with audiences in 2024.”

Owen Teague is spearheading the cast of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which also includes Freya Allen, Peter Macon, Eka Darville and Kevin Durand. The film is set years after the events of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, which ended with the death of Caesar.

The first film in the Planet of the Apes franchise was based on a novel by Pierre Boule. It was released in 1968 and followed Charlton Heston as an astronaut who crash-landed on a planet ruled by intelligent apes, only to discover he was actually on Earth several years after it had been devastated by a nuclear war. The highly-successful film resulted in several Planet of the Apes sequels, a TV series and 2001 remake by Tim Burton before Fox rebooted the franchise with a trilogy that started with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, featuring Andy Serkis.
