Zac Efron responded to Wolverine casting rumors following the news that Hugh Jackman would play him again in Deadpool 3.
Last week, fans got some long-awaited news regarding Deadpool 3. The sequel, which will now officially take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe will not only see the return of Ryan Reynolds as the titular Merc with a Mouth, but also Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, making this his first appearance since his acclaimed film Logan, which was originally the character’s swan song. Before Jackman’s return was confirmed, other actors were often rumored to take over as the MCU’s new Logan, including Zac Efron.
Zac Efron, who was a co-star to Hugh Jackman in the 2017 musical film The Greatest Showman, was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, in which he was interviewed about his new Apple TV+ film, The Greatest Beer Run Ever. During the conversation, he was asked about Marvel Studios’ intentions to cast “a Zac Efron type” in an upcoming project, to which he responded:
“Really? Wow, they could just call me.”
When it comes to casting rumors for the MCU’s new version of Wolverine if Hugh Jackman were to truly retire the claws after Deadpool 3, Zac Efron said this in respect to his The Greatest Showman co-star:
“I think Hugh’s still doing that pretty well, I got to give it to him. I guess I had my foot in the door on that one, I should go talk to him.”
Will Zac Efron ever join the MCU?
Zac Efron often finds himself as a popular candidate amongst fans to fulfill the role of certain characters that have yet to receive their official introduction into the MCU. While Wolverine has been brought up, characters such as The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four have also been thrown out there by fans. Whether Hugh Jackman’s return in Deadpool 3 is an indication that the original Fox X-Men will be fully implemented into the MCU remains to be seen.
Here’s the official synopsis for Deadpool 2:
