Is Lanterns already making a huge mistake? Showrunner Chris Mundy speaks on their potentially controversial direction for Green Lantern’s first live-action series.

Lanterns stands as one of the most anticipated, yet also most worrying, projects in the new DC Universe. While the characters are certainly some of the most beloved in the franchise’s catalogue, it’s no secret that the reputation of Green Lantern has been soured in the public eye thanks to Ryan Reynolds’ infamous flop as the character all the way back in 2011.

This means that the pressure is on for Chris Mundy and his team to deliver something truly special with Lanterns. However, not every Green Lantern fans seems on board with the direction the series is taking. Everything fans know of the project puts it in a very interesting position with the rest of the DC Universe. Unlike other projects, Lanterns is explicitly grounded, focusing on a small town mystery in the same vein as shows like True Detective.

Chris Mundy Speaks On ‘Grounded’ Green Lantern Series

Some fans worried that bringing Lanterns into a grounded format will inherently make the characters and story worse. However, Chris Mundy addressed these fears directly when describing the project on Warner Bros. Discovery’s site. The showrunner explained that the focus was already making a quality series first and foremost, though they always shoot to maintain the magic and wonder that is inherent to characters like Green Lantern.

“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion. The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

Given how controversial the Green Lantern character is in live-action, it does make sense to aim to create a good story first, even if it means some of the more iconic elements of the character are left on the wayside. However, at the very least it seems Lanterns hopes to respect those elements, even if they may not all appear in the series. Though with filming officially starting up, it’s likely not long until details about the project begin to officially leak.
