Is Lanterns peak?

Is Lanterns shaping up better than anyone could have expected? The rumor about the series’ first trailer teases a gritty take on the Green Lantern Corps.

Coming up on two months since the series finale of Peacemaker, fans are jonesing for any news about the next DC Universe project: Lanterns. So far, fans have only gotten one image of the Green Lantern duo. And while there have been expectations that a trailer would drop soon, the show’s premiere being pushed back to next summer has definitely left fans dejected.

Though it seems the trailer may not be as far away as fans think. A teaser for Lanterns was apparently shown off at the HBO Max Upfront in São Paulo. A description of the footage shown has been recapped by Spanish outlet Omelette. It seems that the series is really leaning into its gritty and grounded aesthetic, with there seemingly being a focus on investigations rather than heroics.

“The vibe is of a western, appropriate since the story takes place more in rural areas of the USA, full of brownish tones, something that is repeated in the costumes,” The outlet wrote (Translated by ComicBookMovie.com) “The two disagree, with John arguing that he is better than Hal at saving people. We see a brief scene of Hal Jordan flying, but the uniforms of the two were not revealed.”

“The teaser shows that Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) have been together for some time, training for months, and that Hal Jordan is a kind of substitute teacher for John.”

Lanterns’ Big Green Lantern Cameo

While this trailer description may seem disappointing to some fans who wanted a more comic-accurate take on the Green Lantern Corps., it’s important to note that Lanterns will likely be around or over 8 hours long. It makes sense the show would be conservative with how they use the rings. However, it seems they won’t be straying away from the goofiness of the comic, teasing a cameo of one of the most beloved members of the franchise.

“Finally, there is a brief mention of a squirrel Green Lantern, probably Ch’p, a comic book character.”

This rumor is actually the second time fans have speculated Ch’p showing up in a DC Universe project, with many expecting the Green Lantern to be in Superman due to set photos with a squirrel. It’s unclear if he’ll actually appear in Lanterns as a cameo, or if this line is just meant to be a fun nod. At the very least, it does show that the more wild corners of the universe aren’t being forgotten in this trailer.

The Green Lantern series Lanterns is currently in production for HBO. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe!
