Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness welcomed Captain Marvel‘s Lashana Lynch back to the MCU in the form of another universe’s Captain Marvel, a move that blew the actress’s mind.

Lashana Lynch first joined the MCU in 2019’s Captain Marvel, where she played Carol Danvers’ former friend and fellow Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau. Maria was the mother of Monica Rambea, who will be returning to the franchise as her own hero in next year’s The Marvels.

Lynch recently spoke about her return to the MCU in the Doctor Strange sequel, something that took her by surprise after her character’s off-screen death in WandaVision.

Maria Rambeau In The Multiverse Of Madness

In a recent interview with Empire Online, Lashana Lynch spoke about being told of Maria Rambeau’s death in WandaVision shortly before she was invited to reprise the role – as Captain Marvel – in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Lynch revealed that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had informed her of Maria’s fate in WandaVision. When she was subsequently asked back for the Doctor Strange sequel, she said she assumed she would be playing an ancestor of Maria. Instead, she was told she was going to be stepping into Brie Larson’s shoes to play an alternate Captain Marvel.

“It was a wild one,” Lashana Lynch said of her MCU return, going on to explain:

“Kevin Feige had messaged me, letting me know about Maria’s demise. [Characters] spoke of it in WandaVision, which I’m glad that they did because at least that’s good context.

“One of the producers of Captain Marvel called me and said they had this idea to bring all these new versions of characters back together and they wanted to bring Maria back. I was like, ‘Great, okay, she’s gonna be an ancestor.’ ‘No, she’s gonna be Captain Marvel.’ It blew my mind.

“Hayley [Atwell], Benedict [Cumberbatch], Chiwetel [Ejiofor], a group of us were on Zoom just staring at each other going, ‘What is happening?!'”

Lashana Lynch went on to explain her approach to the new iteration of Maria Rambeau seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, saying “I embraced Maria as a ‘super-mum’, having a chance to flex in this very new but already existent way. It felt like it was meant to be for her.”
