‘Lord of the Rings’ Director Peter Jackson Pays Tribute To Ian Holm

Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit director Peter Jackson paid a heartfelt tribute to Bilbo Baggins actor Ian Holm on Facebook.

Ian Holm’s agent confirmed yesterday that the prolific actor peacefully passed away at the age of 88. Holm is best remembered as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and Ash in Ridley Scott’s Alien. Holm has left an impressive legacy behind, both as a character actor and a geek icon. To celebrate his stint as Bilbo Baggins in Lords of the Rings, Jackson took to Facebook to share just how much Holm meant to him and the world.

In the heartfelt message, Peter Jackson details how he he was anxious to work with an actor as celebrated as Ian Holm. He later goes on to discuss various days on set where Holm provided the cast/crew with tons of joy. There’s also some never before seen behind the scene photos of the actor and Jackson. The director also touched upon bringing the actor back for The Hobbit, which was filmed about a decade later. It’s a vast and fitting tribute for an such as Holm who has had such a varied and cast career.

As for the Lord of the Rings franchise, a new series is currently in the works from Amazon. Production was underway when principal photography was forced to shut down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Plot details remain under wraps, but the streamer announced the cast earlier this year. The series is reportedly set before the events of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring during the Second Age of Middle-Earth.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series is being developed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who leads a writer’s room that includes Game of Thrones alum Bryan Cogman. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J. A. Bayona is set to direct multiple episodes of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series.

The series stars Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, and Daniel Weyman.
