Mahershala Ali’s ‘Blade’ Paused As Marvel Continues Director Search

Marvel is taking its time with Blade.

Mahershala Ali Wesley Snipes Blade MCU

Mahershala Ali’s Blade movie has been put on hold as Marvel Studios continues its search of a new director for the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel is temporarily shutting down production-related activities for Blade, following director Bassam Tariq’s exit from the project. Tariq left Blade about two weeks ago, citing continued shifts in the movie’s production schedule as the reason for his exit. The project was originally expected to begin production this November in Atlanta, Georgia.

Blade is currently going through a new rounds of rewrites by Beau DeMayo, who has previously worked on projects like Neflix’s The Witcher and Marvel’s Moon Knight. Marvel is hoping to get Blade back on track over the next few weeks and begin production in early 2023.

Don’t expect to see Blade in 2023

For now, Blade is unlikely to make its current November 3, 2023 release date as Marvel deepens its search for a replacement director. “They want to really get it right,” an individual with knowledge of the matter told THR.

The cast of Blade currently features Mahershala Ali as the titular titular vampire hunter, with Delroy Lindo, Aaron Pierre and Milan Ray on board in undisclosed roles. It’s unclear if this delay is going to affect the cast of the project.
