Charles Roven has been an integral producer of DC Studios properties ever since Man of Steel. Now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over with their own plans for the DC Universe, he’s unsure if he’ll return.

While every DC Studios movie has a different creative team, similar names repeat in producing the films. Charles Roven is one of those names, having produced films from The Dark Knight to Man of Steel to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. While seemingly an integral part of bringing these superhero films to life, Roven is unsure how he fits into Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for a new DC Universe, though is open to returning if his friend asks:

“Right now, they’re really rebooting everything, and it’s a little bit unclear to me exactly how finite their desire is to use or not use any DCEU actors in the same roles,” Roven told The Hollywood Reporter. “So I’m not really sure, but at the moment, we’re not really having any discussions. James and I are good friends. My wife and I are very good friends with him and his wife, Jenn [Holland]. And so we see each other socially, but we’re not currently talking about any business. But that could change.”

While producers like Charles Roven don’t get the glitz and glamor as directors and actors, they’re just as integral to a film’s development. James Gunn and Peter Safran have a long road ahead of them in proving their new DC Universe to fans, so having such an experienced producer along for the ride at DC Studios would certainly help ease the load.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with both DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
