The new Super Mario Bros. film from Illumination Studios has cast Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt in the lead role as the iconic plumber.
During a press conference in 2018, Nintendo officially announced that Illumination Studios would be developing an animated Mario film. Since then very little has been revealed about the film and those behind it have been keeping their cards close to the chest. Now, however, Nintendo has finally revealed some information about the upcoming Mario movie.
During today’s Nintendo Direct, the company made an unusual choice and made an announcement regarding the film. Traditionally Nintendo Direct is reserved for gaming news but decided to use it as a means of revealing the cast of the film. It included the reveal that Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt would be playing the iconic plumber. In addition, Anya Taylor-Joy will portray Peach, Charlie Day will play Mario’s brother Luigi, Jack Black as the series antagonist Bowser and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong.
You can see the full announcement below:
The Super Mario Bros. film will be co-produced by Nintendo representative director Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri. Nintendo and Universal will co-finance the project, with the latter handling the distribution. Illumination’s previous projects include Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets, and Sing.
Full story details on the upcoming film are currently unknown. The video games, however, traditionally follow Mario on his various adventures. In most games, Mario must rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, often traversing the Mushroom Kingdom and fighting Bowser’s children to do it. Later games would see the locations move away from the iconic Kingdom but generally involved the protagonist battling the fire-breathing Koopa.
