Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker co-editor Maryann Brandon revealed that Mark Hamill’s Force Ghost scene was one of the sequences affected by reshoots.

After Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker sacrificed his life to distract Kylo Ren and help the Resistance heroes escape The First Order after the Battle of Crait, most assumed the Jedi master would return as a Force Ghost to impart his wisdom on Rey down the line. Those fans were proven right when Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker returned in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to help give Rey the final push she needed to confront Emperor Palpatine.

During an interview on the Art of the Cut podcast, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker co-editor Maryann Brandon revealed that Mark Hamill’s Force Ghost scene was one of the sequences affected by the reshoots that occurred in July 2019. As Brandon explained, the creative team behind Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker realized what Mark Hamill’s scene needed to say after the film was put together and the filmmakers returned to get the dialogue they need for the sequence:

The scene on the island with Luke, when Luke sees Rey. The film kind of informed us, after it was together, what it needed to say so we went back and got that dialogue. There was like a funny moment between Poe and Rey when he lands the Falcon and it’s on fire, we wanted to have a more humorous exchange between them. Nothing major, no.”

Furthermore, the scene in which Rey is seen meditating while Leia watches was added during the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker reshoots.
