Bob Iger Says Disney Execs Originally Thought Marvel Would ‘Tarnish The Brand’

Bob Iger Marvel Disney Coronavirus

Disney CEO Bob Iger recalls a time when executives thought Marvel would ruin the brand before they eventually acquired the company.

Disney is no stranger to purchasing major companies, having recently just bought Fox. Disney also purchased Lucasfilm back in 2012 and Marvel in 2009. Now, Disney is a juggernaut in the entertainment business with all these properties under their belt. Disney CEO Bob Iger has teased his retirement for some time. The Marvel acquisition was under Bob Iger and will surely be atop of his achievements once his time at Disney ends.

Disney’s Bob Iger recently came out with a memoir titled, The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company. In it, Bob Iger provided some details that happened behind the scenes. One of them is what executives thought when Disney considered buying Marvel, which had been discussed when Michael Eisner was running the company:

“This wasn’t the first time Marvel has been on Disney’s radar. Early in my time working for Michael, I attended a staff lunch in which he floated the idea of acquiring them. A handful of executives around the table objected. Marvel was too edgy, they said. It would tarnish the Disney brand. There was an assumption at the time — internally, and among members of the board — that Disney was a single, monolithic brand, and all of our businesses existed beneath the Disney umbrella. I sensed Michael knew better, but any negative reaction to the brand, or suggestion that it wasn’t being managed well, he took personally.”
