Is Marvel finally making Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. canon? One of the executives of the MCU’s television branch speaks on the controversial question.
The debate on whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is canon has been waging ever since the show first aired. The series was touted as the first television project completely connected to the MCU. However, as the stakes on both sides of the aisle got higher and Marvel got Disney Plus fever, the two ships slowly began to drift apart.
Some events in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are undeniably canon to the MCU, especially as the earlier seasons set up upcoming films at the time such as Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, there are also moments across the show that clearly couldn’t happen in Marvel’s Sacred Timeline, such as the awakening of the Inhumans and almost everything with the Kree.
Marvel Plays Coy On Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Canon
While Marvel has been wishy-washy on if Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. really is canon to the MCU in the past, the show’s recent resurgence with fans has left their responses a lot more tepid. This includes the most recent one by Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of TV, Streaming, and animation, who spoke on if the series is considered canon.
“I think that S.H.I.E.L.D. is a really great show,” Winderbaum told Screenrant. “And there was a long time where some of the best reveals in that show were during the Winter Soldier era where Hydra emerges and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ I remember that feeling, even knowing what was happening, just being a fan, [going] ‘It really is connected!'”
“I think that there is, in a crazy way, like you said, it does feel like it fits into The Multiverse Saga in an incredible way. I want to go down this road with you, you know I do, but we’re just gonna take a deep breath for a second. Just know that I love that cast, I love Clark Gregg and I love that show.”
It seems Brad Winderbaum is taking the same approach to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Marvel has had for the past decade: say you love it, then just kindly pretend it doesn’t exist! While the new scale of the MCU isn’t exactly conducive to the characters found in the beloved series, it would certainly be a treat to have some of the familiar faces make an appearance before the Multiverse Saga ends.
